SUMMARY:CoS - Reiki History and Reiki Practice-Series IV
DESCRIPTION:Part of the practice of Reiki is telling stories about our lineage: where the practice came from and how it came to us. In recent years\, historians of Reiki have discovered new primary sources that help us better understand the history of the practice and shed light on why we do what we do.\n\nIn this Circle of Scholars offering\, Justin Stein\, PhD\, will provide an overview of Reiki history\, introduce recent findings and theories\, and offer reflections on how they might inform our practice. The material presented will draw on Justin’s forthcoming book\, Alternate Currents: Reiki’s Circulation in the Twentieth-Century North Pacific (University of Hawaii Press\, available September 30)\, as well as his other published and forthcoming works.\n\nThis session is the first part in a series of videos that Justin will be producing for Reiki Home on the history and practice of Reiki.

SUMMARY:Reiki Meditation: History and Practice
DESCRIPTION:When Hawayo Takata was trained in Usui Reiki Ryôhô by Chûjirô Hayashi in Japan in the 1930s\, she learned a form of meditation performed with the palms of the hands pressed together in front of the chest\, a position known in Japanese as gasso. During the meditation\, the practitioner turns their attention inward\, particularly to the lower abdomen\, called the hara or tanden in Japanese. She taught this meditation to many of her students in the 1970s\, but after her death\, many Reiki lineages did not receive this teaching. In this 2-hour workshop\, Dr. Justin B. Stein (PhD\, University of Toronto) will give first a lecture on the form and history of this meditation practice\, including some possible influences on Mikao Usui. There will be time for question and answer\, and time to practice the meditation as a group. All events are listed in PDT. For your own time zone\, please check the World Clock Converter.

SUMMARY:Circle of Scholars
DESCRIPTION:Takata’s Legacy Within the Global Community. In January\, we celebrated the growth of Reiki in the forty years since Hawayo Takata made her transition in December 1980. She dedicated her life to the practice of Reiki\, teaching many students during the over 40 years of her teaching practice. In the last years of her life\, she trained a number of Masters to carry on her work. In the 40 years since her death\, her Masters and their Masters continued to grow and evolve the practice of Reiki creating a variety of styles and practices. The international interest in Reiki helped instigate the emergence of other Reiki styles from Japan that do not include Hawayo Takata in their lineages. A world community is forming that contains diverse attitudes towards practice and lineage. What is the current state of the global Reiki community? What lies beyond? What will unfold in the next 40 years? And\, as a community committed to honoring its elders\, what place will Takata-sensei’s legacy hold as we move forward together into this future?Join our Circle of Scholars as we continue the discussion of the state of Reiki. During this special two-hour webcast\, we will consider how we as Reiki students arrived in this place and where Reiki may be leading the global community. All events are listed in PST. For your own time zone\, please check the World Clock Converter https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter-classic.html

SUMMARY:Circle of Scholars
DESCRIPTION:On December 11\, 1980\, Hawayo Takata made her transition from this physical world to what lies beyond. Reiki\, the practice to which she dedicated her life has continued to grow and evolve during these past 40 years. In the 1980s\, her students and their students shared Reiki around the world\, spawning some new styles of practice and creating disputes over who had received her full teachings. In the 1990s\, Reiki practitioners traveled to Japan seeking to discover what remained of the practice Takata learned in the 1930s. They also took to the internet\, forming new types of communities and ways of sharing information. The twenty-first century provided new opportunities and challenges to honor and reflect upon Takata’s legacy\, including the diverse community that is Reiki Home.\nJoin our Circle of Scholars for a discussion of the state of Reiki\, forty years after Hawayo Takata’s transition. During this special two-hour webcast\, we will consider how we as Reiki students arrived in this place and where Reiki may be leading the global community.
